How To Bring Your Dream Vacation Into your Decor

Create a summer oasis in your home to enjoy year round, like I did in this home in Wellington, Florida.

Ah, summer… warm breezes, sun and sand, cool blue water, relaxing and chilling out with friends, family and the people we love. We go on vacation to relax and to reconnect with ourselves, family and friends. We try new adventures as we travel to new destinations, and love the excitement of luxury, indulgent experiences!

One of my favorite things about being on vacation is being free to do the things I love, in the places I love most, and taking time to just BE. The events of the day slowly roll into each other, to close with a beautiful sunset, a casual dinner and plenty of wine late into the night! I like to focus on simplicity so I can just relax and don’t have to stress about what to cook or what to pack.

I love to find ways to bring the essence of vacation, the things that make me feel so relaxed, happy and content, into my daily life. I build moments of oasis into every day, which makes it easy to be transported to the relaxed, peaceful and joyful feelings I have while at a beachy resort or mountain retreat, if only for a few minutes.

Anniversary weekend looks with Walker & Wade

My friend, Laurette Kittle, designer and founder at Walker & Wade, turned the idea of “bringing vacation home” into a business - creating beautiful, comfortable clothing on the philosophy of “beach to table,” that infuses bright vivid colors and a sexy carefree resort style into our day-to-day lives. Her line is designed for beauty and simplicity - beachwear that is also ready for your next event, from shopping and sightseeing to the dinner table. Throw on some earrings and a strappy sandal and you’re good to go!

Here are some tips for bringing those feelings you have at those memorable vacations into your lifestyle:

  • Spend a little time thinking about your happiest vacation moments, and what made it all so special.

  • Create an inspiration board with examples of colors, textures, fabrics, patterns, clothing, foliage and other details that capture the essence of the places where you feel most relaxed and peaceful.

My inspiration board includes the colors, textures and patterns that remind me of my beach escapes.

  • Designate areas in your home that capture some of the elements that take you right back to those warm tropical places: Whether it’s an entire room, a reading nook or a collection of objects on your night table, you can create an oasis of memories that will make you feel good every day.

  • Select a color palette for your room inspired by the colors in your inspiration board; layer textures, colors, patterns and details that capture the essence of what makes you love that getaway space.

  • As much as you are able, bring the experiences that make your vacation special into your daily life. For example, I wear Walker & Wade year round because it makes me feel the way I do when I am on vacation, and helps me make that relaxed and carefree feeling part of my daily lifestyle.

Every detail of this room captures an element reminiscent of a tropical paradise, from the sand-inspired marble floor, to the palm and flamingo wallpaper mural, to the fronds of dune grass. See how the project came together here.
